Job Description

The Project Engineer is responsible for partially or wholly designing aerospace valves and components along with testing and qualification (as required) in accordance with customer specifications and ISO 9001 and AS 9100 standards with some general guidance and oversight from more experienced engineers. This position will assist the customer with all technical matters across a basic range of Companies products (new or established) and will support long term customer programs with technical assistance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Review customer specifications and technical documents and create proposals.

· Design aerospace valves and components to customer specifications with guidance and oversight from experienced engineers.

· Create Manufacturing and Assembly drawings.

· Design test fixture, create test fixture drawings and test setup schematics.

· Conduct internal and external Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR).

· Create Engineering Order (EO) changes. Coordinate engineering changes with customer and throughout the company.

· Create Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP) to inform customers what will be done during testing.

· Oversee or perform acceptance testing as required along with performing development/prototype build and test.

· Create Qualification Test Procedures (QTP) showing what tests are required and how tests are to be performed. These tests will determine how the part will act under extreme conditions and how it will perform over its lifetime.

· Review qualification routers and oversee qualification testing of valves and components.

· Conduct failure analysis and write Failure Analysis Reports (FAR).

· Perform various engineering calculations, analysis and write reports (e.g. Reliability analysis, FMEA, MTBF, Hazmat, Risk Analysis, etc.)

· Perform various computational analysis or simulations using software tools such as Solid Works, ANSYS Structural and/or CFD (preferred), Mathcad, etc.

· Maintain the drawing and solid model template system.

· Assist the Engineering Manager with the completion of drawings and implementation of designs changes and improvements, technical documents and procedures, etc.

· Conduct internal audits as assigned or required.

· Adhere to standards, methods and procedures.

· Seek and implement process improvement ideas in Engineering. Contribute ideas for innovation and continuous improvement on an ongoing basis.

· Focus on activities that add value and on streamlining activities for increased productivity.

· Assist in selecting appropriate equipment for production or qualification testing; as required.

· Assist, create, and/or manage project schedules with Program Manager using software tools (e.g. Workfront, MS Project, etc.); as required.

· Assist the Quality department during technical discussions across basic valves and components the engineer has knowledge of.

· Assist the Quality department in the calibration of testing equipment.

· Assist the Quality department with the disposition of NCMRs when assigned by Engineering Manager.

· Support the Purchasing department in the procurement and vendor support for orders; as required.

· Coordinate with Suppliers on the resolution of technical issues.

· Recommend and implement design tools, methods, and techniques used by the Engineering department to improve Engineering capability and productivity on a ongoing basis.

· Serve as a technical resource for the inexperience personnel inside or outside the Engineering group.

· Recognize/anticipate barriers and risks to completing assigned work/projects and communicate this to management.

· When standard procedures do not apply, use good judgment and experience to evaluate and solve problems. If successful, document and implement these approaches as standard procedures, as required.

· Demonstrate responsiveness and promptness in serving internal and external customer needs.

· Be mindful to assure that engineering activities adds value (directly or indirectly) to the internal and external customer/stakeholders. i.e. avoid non-value-added work where applicable and appropriate as practically achievable.

· Act resourcefully to ensure that work is completed within specified time and quality requirements.

· Balance and prioritize work and competing demands as effectively and efficiently as possible.

· Ensure thorough familiarity with company policies and procedures. Appropriately apply company policies and procedures, and in compliance with government regulations.

· Independently determines approach to assigned tasks with minimal guidance from more experienced engineers.

· Supports and receive mentoring from more experienced engineers performing various tasks and knowledge transfer.

· Aid in maintaining existing or developing new departmental processes and procedures.

· Guide and train less experience engineers in department process and procedures.

· Perform additional duties and ancillary work that is expected from a project engineer (e.g. customer/vendor liaison and support, project planning and logistics, project risk mitigation, lead team/group meetings and presentations, etc.)

· Perform all other duties as assigned or required by the Engineering Manager.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Level I:

· BE/BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with ABET accreditation preferred. Any applicable or similar BE/BS Engineering to what is preferred.

· Minimum of 3-4 years of engineering experience in a professional engineering and/or manufacturing environment.

· Minimum of 2 years of valves, manifolds, pumps, actuators, hydraulic components, pressure vessels, etc. design experience. Any additional engineering design experience is to be evaluated by the Engineering manager for credit towards these position(s).

· Good working knowledge of CAD software – SolidWorks preferred.

· Some proficiency in using design and analysis software – ANSYS, Advance Spring Design is preferred

· Good working knowledge of GDT (preferred).

· Good proficiency with using MS Office, Outlook, and MathCAD (preferred)

· Must have good communication skills both verbal and written.

· Some familiarity with Aerospace Standards and Aerospace Recommended Practices is preferred.

· Some familiarity of Aerospace industry is preferred.

Level II:

· At this level, the Project Engineer will be comfortable executing the essential functions described herein with less guidance (and more responsibility) than that of a Level I Project Engineer and is trusted by the Engineering manager to do so.

· Satisfactory in meeting the requirements of Level I – Experience/Education/Skill above.

· 5-6 years minimum applicable engineering experience in Engineering and/or Manufacturing.

· Good project engineering skills (both Intrinsic and Engineering), the onset of leadership skills (some ability to lead a small team) and mentoring/training skills, good customer/supplier/upper management relationship and communication skills, etc.

· Ability and proven successful track record of completing basic to moderate complexity projects / BTPs / testing and Qual testing, and customer deliverables (SDRLs), etc. as measured by company/managers metrics and performance criterias. The continued developing and maturing work experience portfolio to quickly communicate experience and accomplishments.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Routinely performs duties in an office and manufacturing environment.

· Exposure to manufacturing noise levels for prolonged periods of time.

· Required to sit and stand for long periods of time.

· Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs.
